I haven’t posted for the last 2 week’s because I went to Cuba for my holiday this year (it was great thanks for asking 😉 ), I was going to post my 14 day dairy but a) that didn’t get finished and b) it would have been quite boring…
So instead I’m going to say it was really fun. I tried new things, got bored of the food, was hot and got a little lost on mojitos a couple of times.
However, up in the hasienda (I have no clue how you spell that…) I got a little fevery – you know, temperature, no energy, slight cough and sensitive to the touch – which wasn’t fun. Particularly considering I was camping that night in some mountains. Stranded.
My ear had also started aching a little up there in the mountains, it does that occasionally but not usually that badly, which made me a little concerned and also rather grumpy.
Next morning: ouch. My ear was killing my (plus the fever was still there). Breakfast was it’s usual egg and bread. I wasn’t feeling particularly hungry and I don’t like egg so I ate a small piece of bread instead.
Over the mountains, we drove into Trinidad. The hottest place in Cuba seems a lot hotter when you’re already hot… Not much happened here so I’ll skip straight to the all inclusive hotel 😛
This is where it all kinda kicked off…
3am first morning I woke up with a really sore ear. Now I’m no good at getting to sleep at the best of times but with an ear throbbing in pain: just no… Called mum across and she decided to get the onsite nurse (all inclusive resorts do have there positives 😛 ). Annoyingly the nurse seemed slightly more concerned with my temperature than my ear and so went a bit wild with treatment.
Firstly I was told to shower and let the water evaporate – which makes sense – then she disappeared and came back with ice alcohol and a tray. Alcohol on the ice, ice under my armpits, neck and on my forehead and the water melted off the ice everywhere else on me. Ummmm…
This, followed by a second shower, succeeded in the old fashioned thermometer registering 1 whole degree less. So she gave me an aspirin to finish.
The next day we got hold of the international doctor – ear still hurt and my temperature had risen straight back up 😛 He was a very nice chap who, unlike the nurses, spoke to me in English rather than interpretive dance. Finally through a little examination and a few questions he prescribed:
– Paracetamol for the fever and pain
– Antibacterial eardrops to I think wash out my ear(?)
– Antibiotics to help fight the earache
– Nose drops to clear my nose. Why? I’m not really sure; my nose was fine…
3 days of large pills and drops in a variety of orifices and I felt slightly better! I had at one point sneezed and grabbed my nose, the pressure went straight to my ear with a painfully bang and then made it clear and be slightly less achey which was niceish for a while. However it didnt really clear it enough for me to not be a little scared of the plane journey home the next day.
Lets say take off hurt… Fortunately 9 hours later and it didn’t seem to hurt as much landing nor taking off and landing again in our connection. Yay!
So there you are: Cuba has good doctors and warm sea, I therefore recommend it as a good holiday destination 🙂
